Abstract

Abstract for "Between a Dog and a Wolf: Lines of Flight" by Clyde Doyle
Between a Dog and a Wolf: Lines of Flight is a component of the broader project Between a Dog and a Wolf: An Animal Empathy Workbook, which emerged from a ten-month participatory programme at CCA Derry~Londonderry. Through a series of workshops, screenings, talks, and performances, the project sought to reimagine the urban environment by interrogating the question: "What do animals know about our neighbourhood that we don’t?" Clyde Doyle’s contribution, "Lines of Flight," formed part of this collective inquiry, using mapping and movement-based exercises to explore the boundaries between human and animal perspectives within the city.

The project brought together a diverse community of participants who, guided by facilitators from various disciplines-including philosophy, sound recording, and movement-investigated personal and public relationships with animals. This process aimed to challenge and redraw the boundaries that define social groups and values in urban life. The resulting publication, structured as an instructional workbook, documents these exercises, offering critical essays and practical activities that encourage readers to engage empathetically with nonhuman life and reconsider established cultural and social divisions.

"Lines of Flight" specifically invited participants to map their environment through the imagined perspectives of animals, fostering an embodied and empathetic approach to place-making. The collective’s decision to classify the publication under the now-defunct Dewey Decimal category "397 Outcast Studies" underscores its focus on marginality and the reconfiguration of social norms, situating the work within the broader context of customs, etiquette, and folklore
