Memory, Space, and New Technologies

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

"Memory, Space, and New Technologies," was a research initiative funded through the Spatial Arts and Visualisation programme. This programme was supported by the Higher Education Authority (HEA) and involved collaboration between University College Dublin (UCD) and the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dublin.

The research team included Dr. Maria Parsons (IADT), Dr. Jenny McDonnell (IADT), Dr. Kevin Wallace (IADT) and Dr. Emile Pine (UCD). The project was also a part of a broader academic collaboration facilitated by the NCAD-UCD Academic Alliance, which aimed to foster interdisciplinary research and innovation, particularly in areas combining creative arts with technology and spatial studies.

The main goals of the "Memory, Space, and New Technologies" project, as part of the Spatial Arts and Visualisation programme were:

-Exploring how new technologies can transform the experience and understanding of space and memory, likely through innovative visualisation and spatial arts methods.
-Investigating interdisciplinary collaboration between technology, space studies, and cultural memory to create new knowledge and creative outputs.
-Supporting the development of advanced digital tools and techniques to capture, represent, and interpret spatial and memory-related data.
-Enhancing educational and research capacities in spatial arts by integrating emerging technologies, potentially including virtual reality, augmented reality, and data visualisation.
-Facilitating collaboration across institutions (HEA, UCD, NCAD, IADT) to promote innovation in spatial arts and visualization with a focus on memory and space.

The initiative advanced spatial arts and visualisation by developing new educational opportunities and symposia, enabling collaborative research and creative projects using digital tools, supporting public exhibitions, and fostering lasting partnerships and commercialisation in the creative sector. Examples of outputs include a symposium held at IADT and a VR installation/speculative visualisation of the Carriglea Industrial School.
