Biography

Dr Sorcha O’Brien is a design historian and lecturer at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Dún Laoghaire, focusing on the intersections of design history, technology, and cultural identity in Ireland. She holds a PhD in History of Design from the University of Brighton, where her AHRC-funded research examined the representation of electrical technology and modernisation in 1920s Ireland. Her academic qualifications also include an MA in History of Design from Middlesex University, a BDes in Industrial Design from the National College of Art and Design, Ireland, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methodology from the University of Brighton.

Dr O’Brien’s research investigates the role of technology and identity in design, particularly through the analysis of technological artefacts and their impact on Irish society. A significant focus of her work has been the design and adoption of domestic electrical appliances and networked devices, especially as they relate to the social history of the Irish home. As Principal Investigator on an AHRC Leadership Fellowship, Dr O’Brien led research into women’s experiences of rural electrification in Ireland during the 1950s and 1960s, exploring the impact of domestic electric products on concepts of modernity and domesticity. This project resulted in the “Kitchen Power: Women’s Experiences of Rural Electrification” exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland, Country Life (2019–2021), which examined the transformative effect of electricity on rural Irish households.

Among her published work, Dr O’Brien is the author of Powering the Nation: Images of the Shannon Scheme and Electricity in Ireland (2017), and the forthcoming Kitchen Power: Irish Women’s Experiences of Rural Electrification. She has also co-edited Love Objects: Emotion, Design and Material Culture and contributed to the Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Design. Her articles and book chapters address topics such as national identity in Irish design, the history of electrical appliances, and representations of technology in Irish culture.

In addition to her research and writing, Dr O’Brien teaches design history and theory at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at IADT, previously holding teaching positions at the National College of Art and Design, TU Dublin, and Kingston University. Her teaching integrates oral history, archival research, and object analysis to foster a comprehensive understanding of the societal impact of technology and design. She is active in professional organizations such as the Design History Society and the Irish Association of Professional Historians, and frequently participates in conferences, public talks, and media appearances discussing the history of technology and its role in shaping Irish identity.
