Biography

Robert Griffin is a lecturer in the Department of Technology and Psychology at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT), Dun Laoghaire. His academic and professional career focuses on the intersection of user experience (UX) design, online learning, and immersive technologies. Robert's expertise includes virtual environments, human-computer interaction in three-dimensional digital spaces, and broader fields such as Creative Computing, ICT, Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and learning design.

During his time at IADT, Robert has served in several leadership roles, including Programme Chair for both the BSc (Hons) in Applied Psychology and MSc in Cyberpsychology programmes. He is actively involved in the Creative Futures Academy, a partnership between IADT, the National College of Art and Design (NCAD), and University College Dublin (UCD). In this capacity, Robert contributes to academic development and curriculum innovation, impacting the direction of interdisciplinary creative and technology education.

Robert's research is aimed at enhancing accessibility in virtual environments, promoting immersive educational experiences, and furthering the discipline of cyberpsychology. As a principal contributor to the Erasmus+ project "Accessible Immersive Learning for Art and Design," he collaborates with academic partners in Ireland, the UK, Ukraine, and Poland to develop advanced methodologies and platforms for post-pandemic education. He also conducts virtual reality production workshops for postgraduate students at the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technologies in Warsaw and Aalto University in Helsinki.

Robert's published works include book chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and conference presentations addressing cyberpsychology, virtual reality, and digital learning practices. His notable publications feature contributions to "Cyberpsychology and Society" and research on anxiety in virtual reality environments.

As an educator, Robert is recognised for a student-focused teaching style. He leads and supervises modules in applied psychology, multimedia, ICT, UX/UI design, software development, and computer technology, making use of contemporary digital tools, including social media, wikis, podcasts, and virtual learning environments, to engage students and support learning outcomes.

Beyond teaching, Robert participates in industry-facing research and development initiatives, such as creating mixed-reality enterprise solutions and advancing digital learning platforms for corporate clients. His recent projects focus on researching empathy within virtual reality contexts and identifying best practices in immersive and online learning design.

Robert's qualifications include a B.A. in Business Studies from Swansea University (1995), an M.Sc. in Computer Applications for Education from Dublin City University (2000), an MSc in Cyberpsychology from IADT (2008), along with various teaching and technology certifications. He serves as Academic Lead for Immersive Technology at the Creative Futures Academy and is a member of both the XR Research Group and FilmEU Alliance.

Through his work, Robert continues to bridge technology, psychology, and art education, contributing to the development of future technologists, designers, and researchers in Ireland and internationally.
