Biography

Dr. Judith Pernin is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT), Dublin, within the Faculty of Film, Art and Creative Technologies. She is affiliated with the XR Research Group and FilmEU.

Her academic background combines Chinese Studies and Film Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in History and Civilization from the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS, Paris), where her research focused on Chinese independent documentaries from 1990 to 2010. She also holds postgraduate and undergraduate degrees in Chinese Studies (INALCO, Paris) and Film Studies (University of Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle).

Dr. Pernin has lived and conducted research in Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan for over a decade. Her work explores topics such as documentary cinema, visual culture, Chinese contemporary history, and XR storytelling. She has written extensively on documentary films, protest movements, and film festivals in East Asia.

At IADT, she is involved in several research projects, including those on the film industry (CresCine), XR storytelling, and Irish documentary film within the WIRE and FILMEU initiatives. Her previous roles include postdoctoral researcher at the Ecole française d’Extrême Orient (Taipei), researcher and deputy chief editor at the Centre d'études français sur la Chine contemporaine (Hong Kong), and visiting scholar at the Centre for Chinese Studies, Taiwan National Library.

Dr. Pernin is recognised for her contributions to academic publications, book chapters, and peer-reviewed conference proceedings, as well as for her editorial and peer-review activities in the field of film and Chinese studies.
