James Molloy is the newly appointed Deputy Librarian at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT), bringing to the role a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to advancing librarianship. Prior to joining IADT in 2025, James served for 18 years at University College Dublin (UCD) Library, where he held a series of pivotal positions, including Student Engagement Librarian and College Liaison for Engineering and Architecture. During his tenure at UCD, he was instrumental in teaching and learning support across a wide range of disciplines, notably engineering, architecture, planning, environmental policy, and business.

James is widely recognised for his innovative work in library outreach, user engagement, and the implementation of eLearning and orientation initiatives. He has taken a lead on major projects such as library orientation, digital learning, and the development of teaching spaces within the library, and was central to UCD Library’s successful submission for the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) Green Library Award 2024, reflecting his commitment to sustainability and green initiatives within the sector. 

His influence extends beyond his home institutions. James has been active in professional bodies and cross-institutional collaborations. He served as Communications Officer on the Board of LIR HEAnet, the user group for libraries on digital information resources in Ireland. He is also a member of the EBSLG (European Business Schools Librarians’ Group), entailing international professional engagement. James has organised professional workshops, such as Library Carpentry training for librarians at UCD, focusing on open source and data skills for library professionals. He has published articles in national library journals, including An Leabharlann and has presented at major conferences such as the CONUL Conference, the IFLA Green Library Award ceremony, and the LAI/CILIP Ireland Annual Conference.

A passionate advocate of information literacy, James has developed and delivered specialist training both in Ireland and internationally, including at the Beijing-Dublin International College (BDIC) in China, where he provided tailored information literacy education for international students. He believes in library outreach, the importance of literacy for lifelong learning, and the necessity of equitable access to library services for all, including marginalised groups such as homeless people, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Throughout his career, James Molloy has demonstrated a strong commitment to embedding the library at the heart of academic and student life, promoting digital innovation, and mentoring the next generation of library professionals.
